Construction has begun on 30 additional beds at Mount Druitt Hospital, moving a long-planned Western Sydney health expansion from design and approvals into delivery.

The work is part of a $120 million NSW Government package across Mount Druitt and Blacktown hospitals. Mount Druitt's component is intended to add an inpatient unit, relocate and expand outpatient services, increase clinical and non-clinical support space, add an Aboriginal family room and provide extra parking.

The new inpatient unit is expected to be completed in late 2027. The timing matters for a hospital that provides 24-hour emergency, paediatric and palliative care as well as planned surgery. The stated aim is to allow more patients to be treated closer to home and reduce transfers from the Mount Druitt emergency department to other Western Sydney hospitals.

The program has two tracks. At Blacktown Hospital, the separate 30-bed component is nearing completion and the beds are expected to become operational before the end of 2026. Two new operating theatres are also under construction there, with completion expected in 2027.

The latest Mount Druitt milestone does not make more beds available immediately, but it gives residents a clearer delivery point after the project's planning phase. For fast-growing western suburbs, the practical question will be how the new clinical spaces and staffing come together as the 2027 completion date approaches.
