It is easy to think of infrastructure as roads, rail and pipes. Sydney's parks, foreshores, plazas and bush reserves are infrastructure too. They are where people exercise, where children play, where communities gather and where the city cools down.

Good public space is not an accident. It is the result of decisions about shading, seating, lighting, paths, water access and the events that are allowed to happen there.

Our coverage of parks and public space will treat them as a serious topic. That means following the projects that improve them, the pressures that wear them down, and the small design choices that decide whether a space is loved or ignored.
