Marrickville’s Addison Road Community Centre is marking a milestone this Saturday, with its Addi Road Fiesta celebrating 50 years since volunteers turned a former army depot into a community space.

The free event runs from 10.30am to 2pm at 142 Addison Road and brings together local markets, entertainment and a program built around the centre’s long association with food, services, care and community activity. Organisers have framed the occasion as both a birthday party and a thank-you to the people who have supported the centre across five decades.

That history matters in a suburb where the mix of independent traders, cultural groups and community organisations is part of daily life. The site has grown into a place where people encounter markets, services, advocacy and cultural events in the same precinct. Saturday’s program is designed to keep that spirit visible rather than turn the anniversary into a formal retrospective.

Visitors can expect a multicultural and diversity-focused festival with local stalls and entertainment. The format is deliberately open: entry is free, the event is family-friendly, and the day is intended to feel as much like a neighbourhood gathering as a programmed festival.

The anniversary also offers a small reminder of how community infrastructure is made. Addi Road traces its origin to volunteers taking on a disused site and shaping it into a place where people could gather and celebrate culture. Fifty years later, the local value is less about nostalgia than the continued usefulness of a venue that can hold markets, services and conversations in one place.

For Inner West readers, it is an easy Saturday option with a wider story behind it. The fiesta is a chance to see a long-running community institution doing what it has always done: making room for people to meet, eat, trade and take part.
