Sydney's startup scene gets a less polished stage tonight, with Startup.Standup. putting founders and venture leaders in front of a comedy-club audience instead of a pitch room.

The Ascend 2026 listing says the event runs on Wednesday 14 October from 7pm to 10pm at Sydney Comedy Club in Moore Park. The format asks ten founders and venture capital participants to trade pitch decks for five-minute original comedy routines, guided by comedian and presenter Merrick Watts.

The founder angle is literal as well as theatrical. The listing names Watts as founder of Posca Hydrate and frames the night around startup people testing their nerve in public. It is a small but useful contrast with the usual founder-stage script, where confidence, traction and growth are expected to dominate the room.

The charity piece gives the event a clearer public purpose. The listing says 100 per cent of net proceeds will support Forever Projects, which works to create sustainable income for women and break the cycle of the Tanzanian orphan crisis. Ticket prices are listed from early-bird to final-release tiers, with capacity described as limited.

For Sydney readers, the event is also a reminder that the startup calendar is not only about capital and artificial intelligence. Community rituals matter: the dinners, panels, informal rooms and slightly risky public moments where founders meet each other as people rather than slides.

The broader Ascend festival is already a major Sydney business story this week, but this event is a distinct slice of it. It takes the city's founder culture and asks whether it can be funny, generous and self-aware for one night, while still doing something practical for a cause beyond the startup circuit.

That is why the event earns its own local angle. Sydney has plenty of rooms where founders are asked to sound certain. A comedy night asks for something less common: vulnerability, timing, the ability to read a room and the humility to fail in public for a useful reason. Those are not bad founder skills either.
