A Sydney conference about artificial intelligence is trying to move the local business conversation past novelty and into judgement, trust and work design.

humAIn is running at The Collider on Pitt Street in Haymarket from Tuesday 13 October to Wednesday 14 October. The City of Sydney event listing frames the program around the question of what remains irreducibly human in the AI era, with sessions for marketing, media, agency and technology leaders.

The timing is useful because many Sydney businesses have already moved beyond the first experiment. The hard questions now are where AI creates measurable advantage, which tasks should stay human, how brands remain distinctive when content becomes cheaper, and how trust survives when synthetic media and AI search shape what people see.

The organiser's programme material says the event includes leaders from major brands and agencies, with sessions on AI search, brand visibility, synthetic media, creative production and the changing role of marketing teams. It also names humAIn founder and curator Cat McGinn, giving the event a local founder-led angle rather than making it just another technology roadshow.

For Sydney and Surrounds readers, the local relevance is not whether every business should buy an AI tool this week. It is that the city now has a serious in-person market for the second-order questions: accountability, capability, customer trust and the cost of handing too much judgement to automated systems.

The useful test for attendees is practical. If a session cannot help a team decide what to automate, what to review, what to measure and what to refuse, the conversation stays abstract. If it can, Haymarket becomes a live workshop in how Sydney's creative and business sectors absorb AI without surrendering the parts of work that still require taste, responsibility and care.

From the desk. Sydney and Surrounds is a practical local newsroom for Greater Sydney. If there is something in your suburb that deserves more attention, we would like to hear about it.
