Small business precincts outside the CBD
Beyond the CBD, dozens of suburban precincts quietly support thousands of small businesses. They deserve more attention.

Conversations about Sydney business often default to the CBD towers. Most of the city's small businesses do not live there. They sit in suburban precincts, light industrial estates and town-centre strips spread across the basin.
These precincts are economically significant. They employ large numbers of people close to where they live, they reduce commuting load on the network, and they keep money circulating within communities.
They also face specific pressures: rents that move with housing, parking and access challenges, and planning rules that were sometimes written for a different era.
Our business desk will keep a steady eye on these places, not only the headline corporate stories.
From the desk. Sydney and Surrounds is a practical local newsroom for Greater Sydney. If there is something in your suburb that deserves more attention, we would like to hear about it.
